Bacon Wrapped Pineapple Burger

You know what they say: “Good things come in bacon-wrapped packages

Ingredients

1 kg lean ground beef
½ cup prepared barbecue sauce
Salt, to taste
Ground black pepper, to taste
4 canned sliced pineapple rings
8 slices bacon
Hamburger buns (optional)
Hamburger toppings (optional)

Preparation

In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef and the barbecue sauce. Shape the beef mixture into 4 patties. Season the patties with salt and pepper.

Place two strips of bacon to make four X’s on the baking sheet. Place a hamburger patty on the center of each X, and a pineapple ring on top of each patty. Wrap the patties in a crisscross fashion by folding up the ends of the strips of bacon. Use a toothpick in the center to help secure the bacon. Repeat with the remaining burgers.

Put the patties on the braai and season the top with salt and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, then carefully (yet confidently) flip them over with a metal spatula. Season with salt and pepper, and cook for another 5 minutes on the other side – 10 minutes in total. To be clear, you only turn the patties once on the braai. Every time you turn them, there is a risk of breaking them. Don’t fiddle with the patties while they are on the braai, because it only makes you look like a beginner.

Put the sliced rolls buttered side down on the grid, then toast until they are golden brown. Take them off the fire. Don’t burn the rolls; it happens easily.

Make this burger even more over-the-top with a slice of cheese— ’cause you know that if bacon, pineapple, and cheese make such a good team on pizza, they’ll be amazing on a burger.
